Motivation Monday

Well I survived the craft fair. Two days! The first day (Friday) was miserable. It was freezing and raining all day and we sold almost nothing.

Miserable, miserable, miserable.

Saturday was a gorgeous day and I personally don’t know how well my cohort fared, but I made more than triple the entire booth fee. I call that a successful day!


Here is an unflattering picture of me nearing the end of the day on Saturday. My table is there on the left. Our items had been pretty thoroughly picked through at this point.

The worst part of craft fairs:

  • Carrying your booth
  • Setting up your booth
  • Nit-picking customers
  • Hagglers (This isn’t a garage sale people!)
  • Price complainers
  • Packing up
  • Carrying your booth

The best part of craft fairs:

  • Making money
  • Meeting fellow crafters
  • Trading with other vendors
  • Compliments
  • Gushers

You can see there are a few more downsides than upsides, but making money — if you make enough — is a big enough PLUS to get over all of the other stuff.

Friday, as I mentioned above, was an awful day. Full of nothing but downsides. I stayed with my in-laws that night and headed to their house feeling very dejected and discouraged (and cold.. very very cold). Had Saturday not been part of the deal, or had it not played out the way it did, I very well may have given up craft shows altogether.

Saturday was a wonderful day full of upsides. I made money! What a bonus! By 11:30 I had made back the booth fee. Once I made more than I paid for parking and food for the two days, I considered it a “profitable” day — we won’t get into materials costs.. I don’t want to dwindle my “profits” too terribly haha! There were a few downsides — some nit-pickers, those are the customers that stand at your table and try to figure out how to make your items, they’re usually fellow crafters and have no intention of actually buying anything. I try to strike up conversation with the nit-pickers. Let them know I’m not “the enemy” so to speak. I’ll just tell them where to buy the pattern for whatever it is they are nit-picking, but typically they are also too cheap to pay for patterns. I had one haggler, seriously.. you’re NOT at a garage sale! In the end, I let him haggle. I couldn’t believe it. I swore I wouldn’t do that, but it was 2 dollars, it was the end of the day, and I could tell he wasn’t going to pay full price. I decided my pride could take the hit in the name of moving merchandise. I also had a few price complainers. These are the people who will just about DIE before they’d make eye contact with you. It’s much easier to complain about your prices loud enough for you to HEAR, but not TO YOU.. They only complain to their shopping companions. Funny enough, my biggest price complainer’s companions both ended up buying from me. So there. Take THAT Complainer!

All in all it was a good experience. I’m going to rebuild my stock (I sold more than half of my merchandise!) and try to get into a show in November. Preferably INDOORS so I don’t have to set up that God-forsaken tent and sit outside in the cold all day. Seriously. Carrying your junk to and from your booth space? Hands down the worst part of doing a craft show. My entire body was sore for 3 days.

I am still not back on track with my running goals. And on that note, I am also going to be changing the format of the Motivation posts. I’ll keep you updated on progress still, but no more pictures. It makes my hubs uncomfortable (I think, he didn’t say that), and I was a little creeped out recently to get a notification that someone had taken one of my pics for some reason (blech!). So, there you have it — from now on, I’ll be focusing on the craft portion of my blog with updates on running/exercise progress, diet (I think we’re going gluten free! Yikes!), but that’ll be about it. I was tired of looking at those stupid pictures anyway.

Motivation Monday

Monday? Bring it. I’m totally ready this week.

I even thought ahead (for once) and jotted notes in a rough draft throughout the week so I wouldn’t forget what I did which days! What a concept!

Here goes:

Monday – I ran 2 miles on the treadmill in the morning, then walked about a mile around the neighborhood with Kacie in the evening.  It was Labor Day, so we went to park for a picnic lunch of junky fast food (but from a local place that cooks it fresh, so… not McDonald’s junky, but junky nonetheless).

Tuesday – I managed to get 2 miles in on the treadmill in the morning. I wanted to add something so I did 30 lunges. It was a cleaning day, sort of. Mostly just hung around the house drinking coffee with friends. Note — lunges kick. my. butt.

Wednesday – It was Lilly’s first day of pre-k! Bittersweet. My baby is growing up so fast, but it’s nice to have a little break a few days a week. I went for a 3 mile run outside in the evening with Kacie, and did 50 lunges (holy moly I’m so sore!).

Thursday –  I had planned on taking a rest day because my body was SO SORE, but I ran 2 miles on the treadmill, and did 30 lunges. I was very proud of myself for not skipping!

Friday – I ran 4.5 miles on the treadmill (2.25 in the morning, 2.25 in the afternoon), and did 30 lunges (they’re still not getting easier!).

Saturday – I had every intention of running 5 miles so I could take a rest day on Sunday (we had company coming over), but I did 50 lunges, and ran no miles. We ended up deep cleaning the house and running errands (I got a new vacuum! Yes, that makes me super happy haha, I am old).

Sunday – I felt gross from skipping on Saturday (plus I had ice cream for dinner Saturday night) so I ran 3 miles on the treadmill in the morning, and 3 miles outside with Kacie in the evening.

Not a bad week for me in the exercise department. Diet is another story. I cannot, for the life of me, seem to be able to just eat breakfast in the morning. I don’t know what is wrong with me. I just don’t think about food until lunch time. I need to just eat when Lilly is eating her cereal. For lunch pretty much the entire week, I made a salad wrap in a tortilla (flour tortilla, slop of dressing spread around, slice of turkey, baby spinach, walnuts, dried cranberries, grapes or tomatoes — I changed it up depending on the day). Those are pretty freakin’ good. Even Lilly would eat half of mine and she “doesn’t eat ‘leaves’!” lol. I’ll probably be eating a lot of those this week too.

I’m currently hanging my head in shame because I STILL have not bought a replacement battery for my stupid scale. I have no idea where I am weight-wise, but I know I feel pretty great, so I’ll take it.

Totals for the week — 20.5 miles run, 190 lunges (what!? lol wow!) No wonder I’m so sore!

Goals MET! Woo!

Goals for this week — I’d like to maintain, so I’ll bump it up a little just for a “rounder” number. 25 miles, 200 lunges. Should be no problem.

Motivation Monday

Happy Labor Day Monday! I hope you are all doing something fun and relaxing!

We’ve all been bums for the past couple of days, which has been very nice.

Last week was a much better workout week for me. I wasn’t sure how it was going to go. I’d fallen out of my routine after being sick, and it wasn’t easy to get back into the swing of things.

Here we go:

Monday: I didn’t get any time on the treadmill because I was so focused on getting last week’s pattern ready to go before Tuesday. What did you guys think of it, by the way?

Tuesday: I got back on track a bit and ran my 3 miles. It was harder than I feel it should have been, but I felt good getting it done!

Wednesday: I slacked a tiny bit and only ran 2 miles. I couldn’t muster the motivation to get that last mile in. I don’t know what the problem was.

Thursday: I didn’t get my run in. I was planning to do it when Jake was putting Lilly to bed, but my bff was having surgery Friday, so I skipped the run and drove to Denver to visit her in the hospital before she went under the knife.

Friday: This was my shining day this week (ha!). I ran 2 miles in the morning, then 2 more miles in the afternoon. At that point, I was “caught up” for the week, but I felt SO good about it, I ran another 3 miles before dinner for a total of 7 miles for the day. I’ll go ahead and lift my arm for the high five you are undoubtedly mentally giving me. 🙂

Saturday: I ran 3 miles in the morning to round out the week.

Sunday: We were all bums for the day and enjoyed every minute of it.

Totals for the week: 15 miles — Goal MET! 

Finally. After two weeks (2? or 3?) of failed goals, this week’s met goals felt REALLY good.

Diet wise? The week was not terrible, but not great either. I had a lot of salad and fresh fruit and veggies (which I love and eat regularly), but I went out to eat with my step mom early in the week, took fast food to bff in the hospital (her request), and went out to dinner with the fam Friday evening. I am getting better at ordering *better* restaurant items, though, so I don’t feel terrible about it.

This week I am going to set a goal of 20 miles. Lilly starts Pre-K Wednesday, so I should have no excuses (ha! But I’m so good at coming up with excuses!).

I know I said pictures this week, but .. sorry. I haven’t had the spare moments to take any and currently my participation is being requested in a game of Jenga.

I’m working on editing this week’s pattern and should have it up tomorrow. I’ve been frantically prepping for the craft show at the end of the month, and finished several WIPs (that’s “work in progress” for those not in the know) this weekend. I also had a weird experience at JoAnn’s yesterday that still blows me away haha! Nothing spectacular, just the idiocy and inconsideration of people continues to shock me — although, with the amount of idiocy I’ve dealt with in my life, it shouldn’t anymore.

Motivation Monday

It’s Monday!

I figure if I try to sound excited about it, maybe I can trick myself into it.

I’m not excited to be writing this post. I’ve actually be dreading writing this post. I was SO sick last week that I ran on Monday and that. was. it.

Seriously. I feel horrible about it, but I forced the run on Monday, and it was awful. I couldn’t breathe, my quads were cramping.. Not pretty.

So, I let the illness win. I thought it was just a dumb summer cold, and that I’d be able to push through it. I was wrong. I was winded just walking around my house!

It was also the last few days before my oldest started school (High school! What?!) and we forced a few “last week of summer” activities. We went to the pool on Tuesday, Lilly and I hit the splash park with friends on Wednesday, and we spent Thursday at the zoo. Friday was Kacie’s first day of school, and Lilly and I didn’t really move off of the couch. All the forced fun had caught up with both of us by then. Saturday, I was signed up to run a 5k in the morning, but skipped it (no one wants to be running next to the snot-dripping, cough-er, or have to resuscitate me if I passed out, which was a real possibility ). My fam got up and walked in a parade, then we all went to the Peach Festival and stood in line forEVER, in the scorching heat, so Lilly could have her face painted like a tiger. Last night, Kacie and I went for a walk, but I don’t count it as much exercise because we walked to the grocery store, bought Ben and Jerry’s, and walked home! I DO count the zoo, because I spent about 4 hours pulling a wagon carrying a 40 lb child.

Amidst all the activity during the week, I did manage to write the pattern for tomorrow’s How-To Tuesday and get it sent off to testers! I’m very excited about this one. It’s a little more complicated than any I’ve posted so far, but I am confident that my testers will help me explain it in a way that most crocheters will be able to follow. Today I am going to get the pictures taken and edited. My goal is to hit the publish button bright and early tomorrow morning.

So — Fitness goals for last week — FAIL

My diet for last week — ALSO FAIL

I’m forgiving myself, because hey, everyone gets sick. My body needed the rest (and left to be “the cook”, my husband will just order food lol). I’ve got an appointment today and Lilly is going with Grandma and Uncle. That usually means a sleepover, but I’m going to take the downtime to get in some much needed running on the treadmill. This week, we have Lilly’s back-to-school (or just, TO school.. since she’s never been). Once she starts, I’ll be adding some weight lifting to my weekly routines.

I’m going to set a tentative goal for 3 miles 4 days this week. I’m still not feeling totally better and I don’t want to push it too much.

Motivation Monday

Oh, hello Monday.. I wasn’t expecting you so soon…

I was sick last week, so here’s what it looked like:

Monday – I felt like my head was going to combust with every blink so I skipped the treadmill. Lame.

Tuesday – I still felt awful, but managed 3 miles throughout the day. Not my goal, but better than nothing.

Wednesday – I felt better, but still not wonderful. I got a mile done in the morning, and another 4 when Lilly went to bed. 

Thursday – I ran 3 miles in the afternoon. I couldn’t seem to muster any energy all week. 

Friday – I had a relapse, and felt junky again. I ran a whopping HALF of a mile in the morning and thought I was going to keel over. 

I didn’t get anything done Saturday OR Sunday. It was a piss-poor workout week for me. I’m happy to say I logged miles even when I felt awful. 

Total miles for that horrendous week? 11.5

I’m still severely lacking in the energy department today. I can’t seem to shake off whatever this bug is. I’m going to scale back my goals for the week and shoot for 3 miles/5x. 

That should be an attainable goal even if I have to walk some of them.

Diet for the week was not the healthiest. I reverted to non-breakfast eating, and had pizza and fast food twice out of sheer laziness and lack of motivation to cook. Nobody was feeling great, so we otherwise ate mostly salads and fruit. 
We’ll get back on track today. We get organic produce delivered to the house and today is delivery day! Yay! 

I’m also trying to convince my husband that we should switch to half-caff coffee, and then to decaf. I have a feeling caffeine is a major culprit in my non-energy issue. This might be a difficult point to push, and I have much work to do to bring him into agreement.

Kacie starts high school on Friday!

Motivation Monday

Here we are.. Another MONDAY. And it’s one of those Mondays, too. Stupid Mondays.

Well I have to report, sadly, that I did NOT accomplish my fitness goals last week. I’m not beating myself up too much over it, because I did manage to fit quite a bit into a pretty full week. It looked something like this:

Monday – I got a nice two mile walk in on the treadmill at a steep incline in the morning, squeezed in a three mile run in the afternoon, and 60 squats for the 30 day squat challenge. Not too shabby.

Tuesday – We hung out at the pool after swimming lessons, and I put off my run until after dinner, which was a mistake. I ran a mile before developing a horrible stomach cramp. I hopped off the treadmill and went for a two mile walk around the neighborhood with my oldest.

Wednesday – I don’t know how I managed it, but I fit in a three mile run after swimming lessons, an afternoon at the pool and park (while Kacie was at piano lessons for an hour), and my bi-weekly grocery shopping trip. Oh yeah, I didn’t shower until 7 PM.. That’s how I did it (sorry fellow grocery shoppers lol).

Thursday – I ran three miles before going to book club, then I went for a walk around the neighborhood with Kacie (two miles) when I got home.

Friday – I totally slacked and didn’t run at all. I DID, however, complete the hat/pattern for tomorrows tutorial! I’m pretty excited to share it with you all! Still.. I felt like a slug.

Saturday – I ran three miles before dinner. Actually — WHILE my family was eating dinner. I didn’t want a repeat of Tuesday’s stomach cramps. Then, while Jake was putting Lilly to bed, Kacie and I went for our two mile walk around the neighborhood.

Sunday – I drove Kacie up into the mountains to drop her off at camp for two weeks. By the time I got home it was 5 o’clock and I was beat. I took a rest day.

You’ll notice no mention of any ab work, which was part of my goal for the week. I did none. I did start the 30 day squat challenge, but didn’t do any squats other than Monday haha, so I’ll be starting that over again this week.

Totals for this week — Miles Ran – 13, Miles Walked – 8 for a total of 21 miles for the week.

Not terrible, but not my goal, either. I’ll be working on it this week.

Goals for this week – 5 miles/3x, 3 miles/3x, 50 Ab exercise reps every other day, complete week one of 30 day squat challenge.

Last week I also paid more attention to my diet and these are a few things I realized, that could be holding me back.

1.  I don’t eat breakfast – I didn’t realize this fully. I was under the impression that I sometimes don’t eat breakfast, but I don’t. Ever. Unless I make a conscious effort to do so (which I will from now on — although, I didn’t eat breakfast today, either, so I guess that will start tomorrow).

2. Because I don’t eat breakfast, I fill up on coffee. This results in me, suddenly starving part way through the day. Then it’s like my body goes into panic-mode and I ravenously devour any and everything that sounds good — ie: unhealthy food choices. I end up overeating at “lunch” time.

3. Sometimes this means I don’t eat dinner (because I am still so full from earlier binge), further propelling my body into an unhealthy, poor metabolic state.

4. I eat fast food about once a week. This has been a shocking realization for me. I did not consider myself a weekly fast food patron. I, honestly, used to proclaim that “we don’t eat a lot of fast food”. Hmm.. Apparently I am delusional, because once a week IS a lot of fast food. Once a week probably doesn’t even give my body enough time to fully rid itself of that junk!

5. Lilly tries to get me to eat snacks ALL DAY LONG. Seriously. She is forever sticking something in my face trying to get me to “just try a little piece” until I will usually, finally just eat it to get her to stop.

All five of these things are problems that I intend to fix. I know it won’t be as easy as I think it should be, but I am going to try.

My scale is broken (needs replacement batteries), so no update there this week. I feel about the same though, weight-wise.

Motivation Monday

Welcome to week 3 of Motivation Monday!

I didn’t get around to picking a Pinspired workout last week, but I really like that idea, so I’m not shelving it yet. I just didn’t have much time to spare last week. I won’t really this week, either, but I’m going to throw something extra in anyway.

On with the report.

Monday – Lilly had swimming lessons last week (and this week), so we headed there after I finished up last week’s Motivation post. I’m having a difficult time remembering exactly what I did that day lol. I know I ran my 3 miles, but I cannot seem to remember at what time of the day.. Hmm.. At any rate, I got it done.

Tuesday – Jake got home a little earlier than normal, so he did me a HUGE favor, and took Lilly to the park so I could run without distraction. I took the opportunity to get a 5 mile day out of the way.

Wednesday – After swimming, my step-mom treated us to lunch, and took Lilly to Build-A-Bear, and home with her to have a sleepover. I took it as a sign, and got my second 5 mile day taken care of (plus, hopefully burned off that Chik-Fil-A lol).

Thursday – I ran 1.5 in the morning before I met Lilly at the pool. I was supposed to have a pool day with friends, but it was raining/lightning(ing?) all day, so we cancelled. I felt bad about splitting up a shorter run, so I ran another 2.5 in the evening (total 4 for the day).

Friday – I was supposed to have a pool day (again) but when we got to the car to go to swim lessons, I found we had been vandalized, and our back window had been shattered out. I spent the day vacuuming glass out of the car and street with the shop-vac instead. Fun. It was such a bummer day, and I was pretty sore by Friday, so I took a rest day.

Saturday – I ran 2 miles in the morning while Lilly was playing with neighbors and Jake was cleaning out the garage. I had plans for a little while in the afternoon, and ran another 2 miles later in the day. I don’t know why I split it up that day, but I ended up with an extra mile (4 for the day).

Sunday – I had more than completed my promised mileage, so I took another rest day.

Total Mileage for the week – 21 (Yay me!)


I just did a weigh in and am at 124 lbs. Woo.. Kind of.

This week’s plan:

This week I am going to add one more 5 mile day for a total of 3, with two 3 mile days. One of the 5 mile days I am going to walk (quickly) on a steep incline. I’m also going to add 3 ab days. I have an “ab-roller” that I actually really like, so I’ll just use that.  I’m going to add some kind of stretch routine in there somewhere too. Maybe yoga or something. My quads have been killing me after the longer runs.
